spent a bit of time chatting with the guy manning the fire observation tower before taking his recommended line through some private logging territory.

my front brake cable snapped, leaving me to klunk these logging hairpins on the rear slick.

siskyou wilderness fire redirect (3 | 8)

IMG_5047
this day was hell. redirected by a work crew who told me my route was closed due to a large fire (you can see the smoke piling up in this photo), i quickly renavigated onto a little used trail that ended up being more a game trail. 200 downed trees, endless miles of bushwhacking, 7000 ft of carrying and plenty of blood later, i took a 2 hr nap to recover from dehydration next to a mud puddle next to the trail. without that puddle... i don't take photos when the going gets rough, so here's the second half of the day.

conceptually, i aimed to create a series of transects through six rivers nf, klamath nf, the marble mountains and the trinity alps. these mountains are coastal deserts that are rarely traveled off highway and combine large and steep prominences with isolation. some of the best dirt riding to date.

a week plus of riding, all but 20 of the 440 miles on dirt. photos soon.

in site news, a rivendell bicycle works banner now graces the right column. thanks everyone there. riv has carried me everywhere i've wanted to go for the past 5 years, including the entirety of this blog, and their staff are the best around. it's no surprise i'm jumping at the chance to fly their colors. support them!

while i'm at it, i want to mention three other friends who make their own stuff and have helped me plenty.
